Before booking an appointment with one of our Clinicians, it may be worth looking at our self-referrals page to check if a Surgery appointment is needed for the service you require. Many NHS services traditionally requiring a referral from your surgery are now available without referral and can be accessed directly from the service provider.
For minor ailments your local Pharmacy is able to provide a range of treatments and advice when illness is likely to be self-limiting.
Please remember that dental problems require an appointment with a Dentist, not your GP surgery.
In the interests of patient safety, if you think you are experiencing a life threatening emergency please call 999 for further advice. Outside of our office hours then NHS Direct can be called to guide you to the most appropriate service for your problem by calling 111.
Any injury sustained within the last 4 weeks can be assessed at Buxton's Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) without appointment, where there is also access to on-site xray where appropriate.
We now have a blood pressure machine in our waiting area along with scales for anyone wishing to check themselves. This is highly accurate and if your result slip is handed to reception will be added to your medical record. You will be contacted if any further action is needed. Therefore no appointment is needed for a blood pressure check up unless specifically advised by a member of staff.
For most health related problems an appointment with one of our GP's or Nurse Practitioners should get you the help you need. When seeing a Nurse Practitioner be reassured that they have a high level of skill and training, and will refer immediately to our on-call GP for further advice where needed.
Many problems can be resolved without the need for referral to a specialist as we have direct access to many investigations locally. When needed, we can support you with both NHS and private referrals from our specialist colleagues.
We have a mixture of advanced appointments with our GP's, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and Health Care assistant. These are bookable up to six weeks in advance. When an appointment is needed at short notice then we also have same-day capacity. An on-call GP is available from 8am until 6.30pm for urgent advice, assessment and home visits when necessary.
Our GP appointments are 10 minutes in duration. Appointments with all other clinicians are 15 minutes.
Booking An Appointment
To book an appointment please follow the link above (for those patients registered for online services). Otherwise appointments can be booked via the Reception team on 01298 23019 or at the reception desk.
To ensure you have an appointment with the most appropriate service for your problem and your problem is dealt with in the most timely manner, our reception team will ask for a brief description of the problem if booking an appointment by phone. This is completely confidential and also is in the interests of patient safety where potentially life-threatening conditions can be picked up at the earliest opportunity.
As a rule of thumb then we would encourage longstanding problems or review appointments to be booked ahead to help with same day capacity for urgent problems. If you are unsure what type of appointment you need, our reception team will be more than happy help you to the most appropriate clinician for your problem.
Sometimes a Doctor will ask a patient to make a telephone appointment rather than visiting the practice. Urgent telephone advice can sometimes be given by a Doctor; call the surgery in the first instance.
You may be offered an appointment with a Nurse Practitioner rather than a Doctor. Nurse Practitioners are qualified to deal with many conditions and you may be seen more quickly. They can prescribe and refer to Specialists in the same way as a GP.
Practice Nurses see patients for reviews of chronic conditions, vaccinations, smears, contraception review etc. that do not need the involvement of a Doctor.
Health Care Assistant
Our Health Care Assistant is available to perform 'well-person' health checks, undertake hypertension annual review. She is also able to take ECGs, undertake wound care and post operative suture (stitch) removal, diabetic foot screening, ear syringing and some injections.
Medical students are attached to the practice from time to time. When this happens you will be informed and if you prefer to see the doctor alone this will be arranged.
Outpatients/inpatients may be referred to consultants at one of a number of hospitals including Buxton, Stepping Hill (Stockport), Macclesfield, Chesterfield, Sheffield and Manchester.
If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else.
